Discover the history of the country
Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is a city rich in history, especially during the period of slavery. Indeed, to know perfectly the history of slavery and the emancipation of the Bahamas, come and visit a museum. Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation, located in a place that has a strong sense since it was created in an old house of the 1760s where slave auctions were held. It retraces slavery over the centuries. Another very important place as a symbol of the colonial past of the Bahamas is the Bahamas National Art Gallery. It is located in Villa Doyle, an old mansion built in the 1860s. This museum exhibits historical and contemporary Bahamian art. Finally, you can discover Pirates of Nassau, a museum dedicated to the history of piracy in the Bahamas. Through figurines and stagings, you will be immersed in the time of the pirates.
In the heart of the local culture
After a few hours of sightseeing in the city, it’s time to eat. The Arawak Cay district located on the seafront is ideal for this. Very famous in Nassau, there are restaurants and bars offering local products at affordable prices. You can taste acras of codfish, papaya sorbets or sip a multicolored fruit juice. And for even more delicacies, go to the only chocolate factory located in Nassau, Graycliff chocolatier. It offers a guided tour of its workshop, as well as a chocolate tasting. Also, for rum lovers, you can go to John Watling’s distillery. It is a rum distillery, you can visit the production, but also a museum that will allow you to know a little more about this place. At the end of the visit, you will have the chance to enjoy some rums and other alcoholic drinks. Finally, if you want to stroll through the streets looking for souvenirs to bring back in your luggage, you should go to the Nassau Straw Market. This is a market where the locals sell some of their creations, often made of straw. Here you will find yourself in a neighborhood with local culture, between stands of souvenirs, food and rum. It’s up to you to treat yourself!
Farniente and water leisure
There is nothing better during your vacation than basking in the sun. For this, you can go to Cable Beach. It is located just a few steps from the city center. You will enjoy the water activities offered such as snorkeling to discover the depths of the ocean. For those who love water activities, you can also go to Jaws Beach or Cabbage Beach. Nassau, hosts on the island a vast hotel complex which you cannot ignore the visit. Indeed, Atlantis Paradise Island is worth a visit. It is composed among others of a huge hotel, a casino and a golf course. You can eat in one of the many restaurants on offer. Finally, don’t miss the large Aquaventure Water Park which appeals to children and adults alike thanks to its pools and slides!
